What is a Traineeship?
A traineeship is a combination of work and structured learning that results in an employer having a well-trained employee who has gained a nationally recognised qualification and skills tailored to meet their business needs. Traineeships can last for 12 months up to as long as 3 years. Traineeships combine practical experience at work with off-the-job training.
Types of Traineeships
There are two types of traineeships - New Entrant and Existing Worker. We currently offer Existing Worker.
Most new entrant traineeships last for 12 months, whilst most existing worker traineeships last for 24 months.
New Entrant Traineeship
A new entrant trainee is defined as a person employed within a business for less than 3 months full-time or part-time for a continuous period not exceeding 12 months. Training costs for new entrant trainees (apart from the administration fee) are fully funded by the NSW Department of Education and Training.
Existing Worker Traineeships
An existing worker trainee is defined as a person who has continuously been employed within a business for more than 3 months full-time or more than 12 months part-time. An existing worker traineeship is suitable for people of all ages and is a fee for service program i.e. the employer funds the training costs of the trainee. However, Commonwealth incentives are available to employers to help meet the cost of training for many existing worker traineeships.
School Based Traineeships
School Based Traineeships provide students with the opportunity to attain a nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification as well as their Higher School Certificate (HSC) and gain valuable work skills and experience through paid employment.
School Based Traineeships are available in the following qualifications:
- Certificate III in Aged Care (CHC30208)
An Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) will be able to help you determine whether your employee is eligible for a traineeship. The AAC manages traineeship applications and administration.
To locate your closest AAC, visit the Australian Apprenticeship website www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au.
Benefits of Traineeships
As an employer, your business may benefit from:
- Having well-trained staff with skills tailored to meet your business needs

- Accessing up to $4,000 incentive payments (subject to eligibility) over the course of the traineeship. In most cases this pays for the training
- Fast-track training opportunities
- A focused, productive team who know you have invested in their future.
This training is funded by the NSW Government in partnership with the Australian Government.
